Integrated Technologies for the Treatment of Oil-Contaminated Waters

The monograph is devoted to the study of modern, environmentally safe, and economically efficient methods for the treatment of water contaminated with oil and petroleum products, and to the development of scientific and technological foundations for their integrated application.
This problem is particularly relevant in regions where oil transportation and terminal operations are carried out, including the territories of Supsa, Kulevi, Batumi, and Poti.
The scientific novelty of the research lies in the development and experimental study of an integrated “green” technology that combines sorption pre-treatment and a baromembrane process. At the first stage, filter-sorbents obtained on the basis of local plant waste—wood sawdust—and secondary polymer waste—polyurethane—are used, while at the subsequent deep-treatment stage, polymeric ultrafiltration membranes synthesized at the Institute of Agricultural and Membrane Technologies are used for membrane filtration.
The monograph discusses the environmental aspects of contamination with oil and petroleum products, methods for eliminating oil spills, as well as traditional and modern methods for the treatment of industrial and wastewater. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of stable emulsions of petroleum hydrocarbons, the effective treatment of which represents a significant technological challenge.
The practical significance of the monograph lies in the development of a resource-saving and environmentally friendly technological scheme for the multistage treatment of oil-contaminated water, which reduces the load on the membrane, contributes to reducing membrane fouling, and improves the quality of the final treatment, achieving up to 99.8% efficiency.
The results obtained can be used in the design of industrial enterprises and wastewater treatment systems, as well as in the planning of measures for the prevention of water and soil contamination by petroleum products and for environmental protection.
